There is absolutely no doubt I have been very lucky. I have managed to survive more than 40 years of coaching. I haven't been fired, been lynched by angry parents, had transfusions as result of bleeding ulcers or had a nervous breakdown. I've managed my way through ruined marriages and my health has held up despite lack of sleep, driving in terrible winter weather conditions or unhealthy food on the road. How did I do it? I am not really sure except my concept of basketball is very simple. Just like the book's title, Chuck It Up, everything I experienced in my coaching career has been simplified. I'm just not smart enough to make it complicated. After all this time, I decided to put my simple philosophies into a simple book. The biggest word I will use is philosophies. The one thing all these years in the profession has given me is many stories. Stories that show you don't need to be a Bob Knight, Mike Krzyzewski or John Wooden, the Wizard of Westwood, to win basketball games. Chuck It Up is a book of stories about a coach that never claimed to be a genius. I was just smart enough to go where I could win games and not get fired. The best way to succeed in coaching basketball is to Chuck It Up.
